OUR STORY

Feather & Fir Farm grew out of an appreciation for local produce and our ardent desire to be part of a sustainable food system worth believing in.

Long before we were farmers, we were devoted customers. We embraced the 100-mile diet, spent our weekends at the farmers market, and built lasting relationships in the local food economy. It became important to know the names and the faces of the people who grew our food. We wanted a viable alternative to the large scale, industrialized global food system, and we wanted to help build it.

So, in 2016, we left the city and moved to our 98-acre farm in Coldwater, Ontario. Soon after, we acquired our first laying hens and two friendly young goats we named Bern and Lyon. While the heritage birds were laying us beautiful coloured eggs, our dairy goats (though charming) were not overly useful as they were both male. Evidently we had a lot to learn!

In our first few years we grew a sizable kitchen garden, started to sell a few herbs and vegetables at the farmers’ market down in the village and incubated our first ducklings. When we expanded our garlic beds into the pasture, we discovered acres upon acres of beautiful loamy soil. It felt like the land itself was telling us what to do next. We set to work building garden plots, greenhouses, irrigation systems, cold rooms and a washing station.

The learning curve was steep and the first seasons were exhausting but, at the same time, truly life-changing. For years we had connected strongly with our local farmers and producers as avid customers, but now we are on the other side of the table, selling our own fresh, organically grown herbs and vegetables to our community. We have become the kind of small-scale, local growers who once influenced and inspired us.

Today, we have expanded and transitioned our operation into a delivery model so we can offer an even larger variety of locally grown and produced food with increased flexibility and accessibility for our customers. For us, this is more than just providing delicious and nutrient-dense food grown without spray and harvested by hand. We remain committed to helping foster a food movement that matters.
